The holidays are the hardest stretch for families already living on tight margins.

Between Thanksgiving and the end of January, families face a compounding financial squeeze: holiday expenses, school break meal gaps, and post-holiday income dips all hit at once. For households in Moreno Valley, Riverside, and Perris, this stretch can force impossible trade-offs between groceries and other essential needs. The Holiday Grocery & Winter Provisions initiative provides sustained food support — not a single meal, but weeks of groceries — through verified partners and direct vendor payments during the most financially compressed period of the year.

Holiday Grocery & Winter Provisions program support

About this program

The Holiday Grocery & Winter Provisions initiative is a seasonal program under the Foundation's Food Security & Pantry Support pillar. Operating from December through January, this initiative provides extended grocery support, winter pantry provisions, and fresh food access to food-insecure households across Riverside County. Unlike a single holiday meal, this program is designed to support families through the full winter stretch — covering the December holidays, school winter break meal gaps, and the post-holiday period when household budgets are most strained. All support is Foundation-administered with full discretion over allocation, vendor-paid, and distributed through verified local partners. Assistance is not guaranteed and is subject to program capacity and verified need.

Our approach

How this program delivers

Between Thanksgiving and January, families face a compounding financial squeeze: holiday expenses, school break meal gaps, heating bills, and post-holiday income dips all hit at once. This initiative provides sustained grocery support — not a single meal, but weeks of food — through the hardest stretch of the year.

All purchases are made through approved vendors. Winter pantry provisions, grocery payments, and meal kits for school-break families are Foundation-administered — no cash goes to individuals.

We document every vendor payment, distribution event, and partner coordination throughout the December-January stretch. Supporters see exactly how their generosity sustained families through our transparency reporting.

Who this program serves

  • Families in Moreno Valley, Riverside, and Perris facing compounded costs during the December–January stretch
  • Seniors on fixed incomes navigating rising costs and winter grocery prices in Riverside County
  • Households with children facing meal gaps during winter school break when free and reduced-price lunch programs pause
  • Working families in the Inland Empire experiencing post-holiday income disruption and seasonal employment gaps

What support looks like

  • Extended winter pantry provisions — grocery staples, canned goods, proteins, grains, and fresh produce for multiple weeks of meals
  • Direct vendor grocery payments at verified local stores for eligible households during December and January
  • Winter meal kits for families with children during school break — breakfast, lunch, and dinner staples to supplement meals normally provided through school programs
  • Coordination with community partners, food banks, and churches for distribution across Moreno Valley, Riverside, and Perris

How we verify need

  • Food bank and community partner intake and household need documentation
  • Community agency and social services referrals within Riverside County

Have questions?

What supporters ask

How is this different from the Thanksgiving Food Basket Initiative?

The Thanksgiving Food Basket provides a complete meal for one holiday. The Holiday Grocery & Winter Provisions initiative provides sustained grocery support over multiple weeks — covering the full December-through-January stretch when families face compounded financial pressure from holiday costs and school break meal gaps.

When does this initiative operate?

This program runs from December through January each year, with planning and fundraising beginning in the fall alongside the Thanksgiving initiative.

What kind of food is provided?

Support includes grocery staples for multiple weeks of meals — proteins, grains, canned goods, pasta, breakfast items, fresh produce, and cooking essentials. For families with children on winter break, kits are designed to supplement meals normally provided through school programs.

Can families receive both Thanksgiving baskets and winter provisions?

Yes. These are separate initiatives addressing different time periods and different needs. A family verified for Thanksgiving baskets may also qualify for winter provisions based on continued documented need through partner intake and subject to program capacity.

Is assistance guaranteed?

No. This is a charitable initiative, not an entitlement program. Assistance is based on verified need, partner capacity, and available funding. The Foundation exercises full discretion over all allocation decisions.

How are donations used during this period?

Every dollar donated to this initiative is administered by the Foundation with full discretion and used to purchase food and supplies from approved vendors or pay grocery vendors directly. The Foundation does not distribute cash. Supporters can view allocation and distribution data through our transparency page.

Does this program help with heating or utility costs?

This initiative focuses specifically on food security. Heating, utility, and housing assistance is addressed through our Housing Stability & Eviction Prevention pillar and its community programs. We coordinate referrals between programs when households face multiple needs.
