Hurricane Preparedness Kits
Every year, coastal communities face the same cycle: hurricane season approaches, emergency supplies sell out, and families who were already stretched thin are left without the basics they need to stay safe. A flashlight with dead batteries. No clean water stored. Important documents scattered. For low-income households and mobile home residents, the gap between surviving a hurricane and suffering through one often comes down to preparation. The Hurricane Preparedness Kits initiative activates under the Foundation’s Rapid Disaster Response pillar before hurricane season begins. We work with local emergency management agencies and community partners to distribute pre-assembled kits to households in the highest-risk areas — giving families the tools and plans they need before the first storm warning.
Hurricanes give warning, but preparedness still fails the people who can least afford it. This initiative distributes pre-assembled emergency kits through partner networks in coastal communities before hurricane season begins — so families aren’t scrambling when the first storm forms.
Every dollar moves through Foundation-approved vendors and distribution partners. Kits, guides, and supplies are procured and delivered directly — never as cash to individuals.
We publish distribution data, partner reporting, and allocation summaries so supporters know exactly how their generosity prepared communities for hurricane season.

Common questions
What is included in a hurricane preparedness kit?
Kits include flashlights, batteries, shelf-stable food, water purification supplies, first aid essentials, a critical documents pouch, and a family emergency plan guide. Contents may vary based on availability and Foundation discretion.
When are kits distributed?
Kits are distributed before hurricane season begins, typically in late spring and early summer. Distribution timing is based on regional hurricane preparedness timelines and partner network readiness.
Can families request kits directly?
No. All kits are distributed through verified community partners and local emergency management coordination. The Foundation does not accept direct applications. This is a charitable initiative, not an entitlement program.
Does this initiative provide assistance during an active hurricane?
No. This initiative focuses on pre-season preparedness. Active hurricane response falls under other programs within the Foundation’s Rapid Disaster Response pillar. The Foundation may activate additional initiatives when hurricanes make landfall.
Is every coastal household guaranteed a kit?
No. This is a charitable initiative, not an entitlement program. Kit distribution is subject to program capacity, community risk assessment, and Foundation discretion. Not every household in a targeted area will necessarily receive a kit.
How are distribution areas selected?
Distribution areas are identified through historical hurricane risk data, local emergency management recommendations, and community partner assessments. The Foundation prioritizes areas with the greatest documented preparedness gaps and highest-risk populations.
